India's SaaS Moment

India is the third-largest SaaS ecosystem globally. Companies like Freshworks, Zoho, Chargebee, and Postman have proven that world-class SaaS products can be built from India.

But the playbook for building SaaS in India is different from Silicon Valley. Here's what I've learned building TechSaaS.

Infrastructure: Self-Hosted vs Cloud

For Indian SaaS companies serving global customers:

Use Cloudflare for CDN and edge (free)
Self-host core services on Indian dedicated servers ($60-200/month)
Use AWS Mumbai for burst capacity if needed
Save 60-80% on infrastructure costs

Our stack: Proxmox + Docker + Cloudflare Tunnel. Total infrastructure cost: <$100/month for 50+ services.

Payments: The India Challenge

Indian payment processing is complex:

Domestic: Razorpay or Cashfree (2% fee)
International: Stripe (via Stripe Atlas) or Razorpay International
GST: 18% on all software services
Foreign exchange: Use proper FIRC for international payments

We use HyperSwitch (open-source payment orchestrator) to route through multiple processors.

Compliance

GST Registration: Required for all SaaS companies
RBI Guidelines: For handling international payments
IT Act: Data protection requirements
SOC 2: If serving enterprise customers (we help with this)

Hiring Engineers in India

The talent pool is massive but finding good infrastructure engineers is hard:

Junior engineers: Rs 4-8 LPA
Mid-level: Rs 8-18 LPA
Senior: Rs 18-40 LPA
Staff/Principal: Rs 40-80 LPA

Remote-first and good tooling attract better talent than office perks.

Scaling from 0 to 1000 Customers

1. 0-10 customers: Do everything manually. Learn what they actually need. 2. 10-50 customers: Automate deployment and onboarding. 3. 50-200 customers: Build self-service. Add monitoring and alerting. 4. 200-1000 customers: Scale infrastructure. Hire SRE. Add multi-tenancy.
